Email

No matter which Email Client Software you use, Email works the same. Every person who wishes to use Internet Email must have a correct and unique Email Address.

My Email address is rokelley@ArkansasUSA.com . For me to have this address, the ArkansasUSA.com POST Office must have an account setup for rokelley. When someone around the world sends an email to me, the Internet is only concerned with the information to the right of the @ sign. It looks for ArkansasUSA.com and sends the mail to it. When it arrives at our ArkansasUSA site, our POST Office then looks at the name to the left of the @ sign and checks it's database. If it finds rokelley then the message is dropped into my box. Spelling must be exact, case is not important, and if the spelling is not correct the message is returned to the sender.

I use Pegasus Email software, but I could use any Internet Email software. My software is interested in four things.

It wants to know my SMTP mail server which is the name of the ArkansasUSA POST Office computer which is mail.arkansasusa.com.
It wants to know my POP3 mail server which is again the name of the ArkansasUSA POST Office computer which is mail.arkansasusa.com.
It wants to know the POP3 name of my account. This could be anything. The person who establishes the account using the POST Office software determines this. We normally use the username for the POP3, so my account is rokelley.
Lastly it needs to know my POST Office password. This too is created by an employee of the NET connection when the Email Account is created. We require all passwords to be in upper case. We do this as an added level of security because most Internet Hackers are UNIX users and UNIX uses lower case passwords.

Now that my Email Client software is setup, I can start the software, enter my username which is rokelley, and enter my password. This logs me into my Email Account on the ArkansasUSA POST Office so I can send and receive Email.

One last word about Email especially for those former America On-Line users. Internet Email software will not tell you when you have mail unless you set it up to do so. Most softwares require you to check you mail by selecting a menu option or ICON. Almost all have a setting in the software that will allow you to cause the software to dialin send and receive mail then hang-up. Pegasus will allow you to assign any wav file so it can alert you when you have new mail. Pegasus is a freeware software and is widely use by experienced Internet Users.
